Out Of the Darkness

Depression is one of the most common, yet potentially destructive, mental health disorders a person can experience. Each year, about 6.7% of the population is living with major depression, interfering with personal and professional relationships and leading to deep despair. The causes of the illness vary from person to person, and can include genetic, biochemical, and experiential elements that coalesce to create emotional, physical, and cognitive disturbances.

Symptoms of depression include:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, and hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in your normal activities, including things you used to enjoy
  • Changes in your sleeping habits
  • Fatigue and loss of energy
  • Feelings of irritability or anger
  • Slowed cognitive function and memory problems
  • Self-blame and feelings of worthlessness
  • Changes in appetite, including both overeating and not eating enough
  • Thoughts of suicide and a sense the life is not worth living

The sense of worthlessness, inability to participate in normal activities, social withdrawal, and overwhelming sadness that so often characterize the illness may leave you feeling hopeless about the future and your prospects for healing. The insidious nature of the illness can isolate you from the very relationships, social networks, and services you need to aid your recovery, creating a cycle of suffering that further aggravates your symptoms. However, depression does not have to control your life–with proper treatment and support, you can learn to manage your symptoms, regain stability, and experience a full range of emotions in a healthy way.

The intimate, nurturing environment at Bridges to Recovery is ideally suited to help people struggling with depression. We offer solace from the stresses of everyday life to allow you to focus completely on your healing process. In our comfortable, home-like facilities, you are free to explore the difficult emotions caused by depression in a safe milieu with the support of both highly trained, empathetic professionals and a small group of peers who understand what you are going through. With a staff-to-client ratio of 2:1, we are able to provide frequent observation and personalized attention, maximizing your engagement and breaking the isolation of depression.

Because we recognize that your mental health disorder is often a long-term condition, we work with your outpatient treatment team to create an aftercare plan for continuation of care when you leave Bridges, ensuring that the knowledge and well-being you gain from your time with us is preserved and continues to develop. At Bridges, we are committed to offering the best treatments available and guide you toward emotional stability while lifting you out of the darkness of depression.
