What Exactly is Anxiety? Anxiety Treatment Options Distinct Types of Anxiety Your Path to Calm
From a young age, Matthew has always felt like something was wrong. He often cites a very vivid memory from his childhood of him fighting with his parents and refusing to leave his bedroom to attend a school friend’s birthday party. The very thought of leaving the comfort of his home and going to an unfamiliar place surrounded by strange people made Matthew feel like he could not breathe. Unfortunately, this fear caused Matthew to lose a significant number of friends at school. While it wasn’t realized at the time, Matthew was suffering from generalized and social anxiety disorder.
Over the years, Matthew’s social phobia improved and he started to feel better. He was a popular and upright student throughout high school. During his tenure at college he was elected President of Student Affairs and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science. Immediately following college, he even accepted a high-paying job as a software engineer for a cybersecurity company. Yet, despite all of his accomplishments, Matthew still experiences an overwhelming sense of dread and worry every single day. Some days the very idea of getting out of bed and going to work brings him to tears and makes him feel like he cannot breathe.
What is going on with Matthew?
Anxiety disorder is among the most prevalent mental health disorders in the United States. While findings vary on exactly how many people suffer from anxiety, one recent study concluded that approximately 18% of the country’s population lives with at least one type of anxiety disorder, with some research showing numbers closer to 10%. In either scenario, we are seeing a surprisingly high number considering how few people discuss their anxiety. Despite the number of people who actually live with an anxiety disorder, many people do not understand what anxiety is.
So, let us get that straight: what exactly is anxiety?
As is the case with depression and many other mental health disorders, numerous people fundamentally use the term “anxiety” incorrectly. It is not simply being worried about an upcoming presentation or feeling awkward in a new group of people. Anxiety is much more complex than that. The simplest way to phrase what anxiety means is this: anxiety is a psychological state that is characterized by intense feelings of tension, fear, and terror that can interfere with an individual’s personal and professional lives.
Although anxiety is a general term used to define and explain the emotions and feelings involved, anxiety disorder can be categorized into different and more specific mental health disorders.
Anxiety disorder, which is when an individual suffers from anxiety so severe that it affects their daily interactions and overall state of life, can be segmented into different types, including:
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) are also among the major types of anxiety disorders.
Although the different types of anxiety disorders can range in severity depending on the individual, it is important to understand that anxiety comes in many forms and can affect people in different ways. If you or someone you love suffer from a type of anxiety disorder, what can you do about it? What types of anxiety treatment are available for you?
The key to any successful form of anxiety treatment is to first determine what type of anxiety disorder an individual suffers from, determine the root of the anxiety, and then design the perfect treatment type to meet the individual’s unique needs.
