Complicated Bereavement

Complicated bereavement, or complicated grief, requires specialized care that honors your loss while helping you move towards a healthy, joyful life. Bridges to Recovery offers a nurturing, compassionate environment in which to heal from the death of a loved one with the guidance of empathetic professionals who understand the complex nature of grief. Through intensive, personalized individual psychotherapygroup therapy, and holistic therapies, you can safely explore your experience while developing the insight and skills you need to accept your loss and regain emotional stability. The immersive nature of our program allows you to rapidly find relief from your suffering and move on from loss with a renewed sense of purpose and psychological wellness.

Towards Acceptance and Healing

The loss of a loved one is one of the most devastating experiences we encounter as humans. Mourning is a painful but normal process that takes you through a range of difficult emotions that fade over time as you heal, ultimately leaving you with a sense of acceptance and the ability to return to ordinary life. However, complicated bereavement disrupts this process and blocks normal functioning; the pain of your loss does not dissipate, but remains fresh–perhaps even increasing. The death of your loved one becomes your central focus, time does not distance you from your emotional suffering, and you stay locked in a state of constant mourning.

Symptoms of complicated bereavement include:

  • Overwhelming sorrow and grief
  • Constant thoughts of your loved one
  • Intense longing for the person you have lost
  • Disbelief or an inability to accept death
  • Feelings of bitterness, anger or guilt
  • Numbness and detachment
  • Intense feelings of loneliness, even around other people
  • Avoiding reminders of your loss
  • Difficulty caring for and trusting other people
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep disruption

Complicated bereavement does not only affect you emotionally, but can produce physical symptoms as well, including weight loss or gain, muscle tension and pain, extreme fatigue, and nausea. The complex nature of loss and its emotional and somatic effects can isolate you from family and friends and create overwhelming feelings of helplessness about a future without your loved one.

At Bridges to Recovery, we work with you to remove the obstacles to healing and move through the mourning process in a way that allows you to find peace, acceptance, and restored function. Our facilities act as a place of solace, free from the reminders and stressors of your everyday life, allowing you to take the next steps toward recovery. The intimate nature of our program provides a welcoming, comfortable environment in which you can explore your loss and its impact on your life with clinicians and peers who respect and understand your grief. Connecting with other people and breaking your isolation are critical components to your healing process; knowing that you are not alone can provide deep comfort and help you move forward. Our Grief & Loss therapy group is particularly valuable for people suffering from complicated bereavement, offering a structured therapeutic space to process difficult emotions, gain a sense of belonging, and uncover ways of re-integrating with the world around you. Throughout your time at Bridges, our multidisciplinary team will guide you as you develop the skills you need to recover from profound loss, cope with distress, and live a richer, more rewarding life.
