What is yoga ?
The practice of yoga is the discipline that improves health and has been shown to address a number of mental health concerns such as; depression, insomnia, and anxiety. Through the integration of body movements and breathing exercises, the yoga instructor helps illuminate ways that the client can decrease their stress levels and increase their bodily awareness. Research has shown that the use of yoga with certain individuals can improve cognitive functioning and reduce stress in certain mental health issues along with reducing high blood pressure and enhance overall heart health. Our yoga instructors strive to integrate mindfulness techniques with body movements to enhance the overall experience of each member and increase their satisfaction with the process.
Bridges to Recovery offers individuals with an added component of Yoga whereas the instructor and her experience with mental health issues can focus the practice to the level of the individuals present along with their current mental health and physical concerns. This opportunity, done in a compassionate and caring manner, allows the client to slowly become more aware of their body and to develop a stronger, more authentic connection with their mind-body issues.
How does yoga work?
Our residential program found that the yoga program was integral to ongoing emotional growth. The framework of the Yoga class is often determined by the general consensus of the group in regard to their experience level and individual needs. The challenge for each member will be different, of course, depending on their physical abilities and their openness to new experiences. The instructor takes the needs of each member into consideration, of course, when leading and will check in frequently with the client to ensure that the necessary skills and practice is being done safely and correctly.
What happens if someone is reluctant to engage in yoga?
Many individuals that come to our residential program will relate that they have never participated in yoga before and are uncomfortable in practicing something new. Most clients who enter into our program have never engaged in a yoga practice and the leader makes every effort to acclimate entering clients to the class. Leaders, especially in Yoga will use the experience of being in a small format to be able to focus upon the individual needs of each client.
What should yoga accomplish?
Yoga should accomplish an increased ability to connect mind and body experiences. Further, it provides increased mindfulness and a greater ability to engage in physical activity regardless of physical conditioning.
Bridges to Recovery utilizes teachers who are highly experienced and who demonstrate a strong motivation to help clients reach their full potential and reach their goals and dreams.
