From Trauma to Treatment

Traumatic events such as sexual assault, intimate partner violence, childhood abuse, natural disasters, and combat can result in deep emotional distress with long-lasting effects. For people with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, the natural healing process that diminishes the effects of trauma over time is disrupted, and the traumatic event becomes a defining, debilitating feature of your emotional, cognitive, and behavioral patterns. PTSD can manifest in a wide range of psychological and physical symptoms, leading to interpersonal conflict, self-destructive behavior, decreased social and professional function, isolation, and profound inner turmoil.

The four subgroups of PTSD symptoms are:

  • Intrusive memories: Persistent thoughts of the traumatic event, intense emotional and physical reactions to reminders of the event, reliving the event through flashbacks, and nightmares involving the trauma.
  • Avoidance: Avoiding thinking and talking about the trauma as well as avoiding situations that may trigger memories of the event.
  • Negative changes in thinking and mood: Negative feelings about yourself, others, and the future; persistent feelings of despair, inability to feel joy, social conflicts, cognitive impairments such as memory problems, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, and a lack of passion and usefulness in your life.
  • Arousal symptoms: Hypervigilance, rage, irritability, sleep disruption, engaging in self-destructive behaviors such as substance abuse, deep feelings of guilt and shame, and difficulty concentrating.
