Risk Taking Behaviors
Risk taking behaviors manifests itself in various forms. Individuals will seek certain activities that place themselves in dangerous situations as they "act out" putting themselves and others in harm's way. This most-often includes behaviors such as excessive spending/shopping, gambling, sexual promiscuity, and thrill seeking behaviors. Bridges to Recovery approaches these risk-taking behaviors by breaking down the thoughts that lead to these actions and then replace them with healthy alternative coping mechanisms. We treat each person individually and help our patients identify healthy approaches to achieveing a higher functioning level. We are one of the only psychological residential treatment programs offering four or more individual psychotherapy sessions a week with a clinical psychologist and once a week with our psychiatrist.
It is much more apparent when a spending problem occurs because an individual or their family can begin to see signs of financial devastation, or on the contrary, hording as a result of someone who shops too much or overspends. In this instance, our clinical team addresses all aspects of this behavior in a safe and non-judgemental way.
Many times a patient will come to Bridges to Recovery to examine why they cannot stop participating in their compulsivity to gamble even though they are suffering extreme emotional consequences. For the pathological gambler, it has become quite accessible to gamble from your home. The internet creates a new outlet for those who are addicted to gambling. This risk taking behavior can cause damage both financially and emotionally to one's life.
Sexual promiscuity has taken on a new face in America. A partner would get in trouble usually if they cheated on their husband or wife with another person. The internet now allows emotional affairs and sexual promiscuity to occur with out even leaving your home or office. Bridges to Recovery understands and helps an individual who wishes to treat this type of compulsivity in a safe and private atmosphere.
Thrill seeking behaviors that cause harm can range from kleptomania, to purposefully driving too fast or in an unsafe manor. The thrill comes from not being caught or having an accident, but inevitably in the end, a person who participates in thrill seeking behavior will get caught. The guilt and shame from these behaviors can cause depression and create interpersonal and family problems.
