What are Anxiety Disorders?

In order to define the term "Anxiety" one must first differentiate this state from one of "fear". Fear is an emotional and physiological arousal to some real danger that forces us to take corrective action. Anxiety is a similar emotional and physiological response but it is out of proportion to the real present danger. In other words, anxiety is a subjective state of apprehension or tension that is triggered by underlying issues that are not readily apparent to the person suffering the anxiety. Anxiety Disorders can also consist of attempts to escape or avoid anxiety, such as with psychophysiological or obsessional forms of coping. These disorders are very serious problems when they become excessive and interfere with normal day-to-day functioning.
